Hjh Maimunah

A perennial favourite for nasi padang, where you point at a colourful spread of home-style Malay and Indonesian dishes and have them piled onto rice. Run by the family of the late Hjh Maimunah, it has earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand and draws a lunchtime queue that regularly spills out the door. Load your plate with beef rendang, grilled ayam bakar, sambal goreng and the cult tahu telur (bean-curd omelette in sweet sauce). Everything is halal, generously portioned and reasonable for the quality. It sits in the Kampong Glam heritage district, so it pairs naturally with a wander around the Sultan Mosque and Arab Street afterwards.
