Little India

Loud, fragrant and gloriously colourful, Little India is the most sensory of Singapore's ethnic quarters. Garland-makers thread jasmine outside the ornate Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, the air smells of spice and incense, and the candy-bright House of Tan Teng Niah is the city's most photographed shophouse. The Tekka Centre pairs a wet market with a hawker hall serving some of the best biryani and dosa in town, while the 24-hour Mustafa Centre is a chaotic emporium selling, quite literally, everything. It's brightest on Sundays and during Deepavali, when the streets blaze with lights. Go with an appetite and a fully charged camera.
