Katong & Joo Chiat

Out east, the neighbouring districts of Katong and Joo Chiat are the heartland of Peranakan (Straits Chinese) culture — the centuries-old fusion of Chinese, Malay and European traditions. Their fame rests on the shophouses: rows of two-storey terraces in candy pastels, hand-painted ceramic tiles and ornate plasterwork, with the most photographed cluster on Koon Seng Road. Beyond the facades lies excellent eating — the original Katong laksa, beloved kaya-toast institutions and colourful nyonya kueh — plus indie boutiques and a growing café scene. Pair a morning of photos and snacking with the Peranakan Museum in town for context. It's mostly residential and uncrowded, an easy, atmospheric half-day.
