Gillman Barracks

Hidden in a leafy pocket near Alexandra, Gillman Barracks is a cluster of 1930s former British army barracks reborn as a contemporary-art enclave. White colonial blocks shaded by mature rain trees now house a rotating line-up of international and local galleries, the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore, outdoor sculptures and a handful of relaxed restaurants and bars. Entry to the galleries is free, and the unhurried, tucked-away setting makes it a refreshing antidote to the tourist crowds — particularly during evening art openings and the annual Art After Dark block party. Check which galleries are open before you go (most close Mondays and between shows). It's easiest reached by taxi or a short walk from Labrador Park MRT.
