Buddha Tooth Relic Temple

Rising five storeys over the heart of Chinatown, this lavish Buddhist temple-and-museum was built in 2007 in a richly ornamented Tang-dynasty style — all red lacquer, gilded carving and hundreds of Buddha statues. Its name comes from the relic it enshrines, said to be a tooth of the Buddha, displayed within a stupa made from more than 300 kilograms of gold on the fourth floor. Don't miss the serene rooftop garden with its huge prayer wheel, the museum of Buddhist art, and the chance to catch chanting or a vegetarian meal in the basement. It's free, but dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered). It's a short walk from the Chinatown hawker centres and street market.
