Swee Choon Tim Sum

A Jalan Besar institution since 1962 and a magnet for Singapore's late-night supper crowd. Trays of bite-size Cantonese dim sum — prawn har gow, char siew bao, custard buns, xiao long bao and their cult deep-fried 'mee suah kueh' — arrive fast and stay refreshingly cheap. Unlike fancy hotel yum cha, it's a buzzy, no-frills spot where families and post-clubbing groups share tables late into the night. It runs into the small hours most days (closed Tuesdays), so it's the place to land after a night out. Expect a wait at peak times, but put your name down — the turnover is quick.
